One of Many Infectious Diseases

One of Many Infectious Diseases: consumption disease In 1720 Dr. Benjamin Martin correctly identified the presumptive cause of consumption disease. He suggested that it might be caused by an infectious organism. Moreover, he hypothesized that it could be spread from person to person by airborne particles, material found in the spray coming from the mouth of someone suffering with consumption disease. Still, he could not prove that hypothesis. Not until 1882 was Robert Koch able to prove Martin’s theory. Koch’s highly useful investigations made good use of a device known as a microscope. By looking at slides through the scope’s lens, that scientific investigator could see within patients’ sputum the living matter that was too small to be seen by the human eye. He saw bacteria, the organisms that would later be attacked and destroyed with antibiotics. In other words, his observations helped to pave the way for the introduction of a way by which to treat consumption disease.
