Nicki Minaj mixtapes and the making of an artist

For Onika Tanya Maraj or Nicki Minaj mixed tapes began a whole new way of life and was a vehicle to getting away from a difficult childhood. Onika was born in Trinidad and was raised in her early years by her grandmother, but by five she had already experienced an attempt on ending her young life by her father. It was after moving to New York and graduating from high school where vocal arts and drama where key components in her curriculum that Onika was able to look back and say that music was the friend she could lean on to get through tough times. In 2004 Onika Tanya Maraj became Nicki Minaj and the beginnings of the Nicki Minaj mixed tapes collection was spotted on MySpace. This launched Minaj’s career in to the professional world of music. Though her introduction into the main stream of rapping and singing was ushered in by the label Dirty Money, the next installment of Nicki Minaj mixtapes found its way to the microphone through a collaboration with Lil Wayne. This Nicki Minaj mixtape was pressed and released in 2007 with a cover featuring a Barbie Doll. The following year would see the next Nicki Minaj mixtape and with a win for the Female Artist of the Year Award under her belt, number three of the succession of Nicki Minaj mixtapes was released a year later. With her mixed tape success and a career that was taking off, Nicki Minaj was signed to her first contract with Young Money Entertainment. Nicki Minaj has since been featured on a number of hits with Ludacris, Usher, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, and Sean Kingston. Her professional mixed tape collection includes Playtime Is Over, Sucka Free, and Beam Me Up Scotty. Barbie World was another mixtape that found its way to the ears of Nicki Minaj’s fan base though she does not support its release. Among her role models are her mentor Lil Wayne, Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot. While she has been featured in XXL Magazine, Nicki takes every opportunity she can find to get her message to other women and especially young girls that they do not have to portray themselves as sex symbols to be successful and true talent will take them further in life. Nicki’s music gives her audience a peak into another of her coping mechanisms that transformed her into the versatile artist she is today with the many sides of her personality and their voices that speak through her music.
