Learning a Musical Instrument as an Adult

As an adult it’s not as easy as to learn an instrument, such as the drums, as it might be for a child or teenager. Commitments to work, family, friends and other social engagements makes it near impossible to commit one night every week to private drum lessons.

The Internet has made it possible for hundreds of music teachers (Drums, Piano, Guitar etc.) to record video lessons from a studio or even their home and publish dvd lessons and online videos on a shoe string budget.

You as a potential student of these teachers, can take advantage of world class music instruction for a fraction the price of private lessons and you can learn entirely at your own pace.

DVD Lessons

DVD music lessons are sold usually individually to teach one particular skill or as a set in the form of a complete beginners course.

More popular instruments such as the Guitar and Piano will tend to have more courses available for them since the demand is larger. 

A complete course is a good option to go if you have no experience with the particular instrument. Following a dvd self study course means you’ll get consistent instruction and never have to go searching for additional content as you progress.

Online Lessons

Online videos are a great alternative to DVDs, how ever I feel they are best suited to adults who have some experience with the instrument they’re looking to learn.

Why? Well online lessons don’t always provide the same detailed curriculum as a dvd course so you may be able to get started from one teacher but then be left looking for more content after a few weeks.

If you have some experience with the drums, piano, guitar or what ever instrument you’re interested in then you can seek out lessons on a particular skill you want to learn.

The bottom line is do your research and learn as much as you can about a particular instructor before you commit to purchasing their course. There are good and bad products you can learn from.
