Guitar tutorials: Self Guided Learning for your Lifestyle
February 26th, 2010 by admin
Guitar tutorials are a great way to start your musical education at your own pace, on your own time. However, before you begin, there are a few things you should know to avoid wasting money on low quality programs or an instrument that might curse your ability to play correctly. Instead, do the research and know how to find the best ways to invest in your new hobby without breaking the bank or your motivation!
Your Instrument
There is simply no way around it, you must have a guitar. Some people opt to borrow instruments from a friend or relative. This can work fine; however make sure you will have access to that instrument on a daily basis. If using your cousin, sister, or uncle’s guitar means driving all the way to their house every day, this could prove problematic. It will be easy to put off practice or other things my come up that will not allow time for the drive. Even bad weather could keep you from your learning. Make sure you can keep the instrument at your home so you have access to it all the time.
If you plan to purchase your first guitar, make sure you are buying a good quality instrument. Damaged or flawed instruments can hinder sound quality and make playing well nearly impossible. Before you invest a lot of money in a brand new guitar, consider purchasing one second hand. In many cases, you will pay far less than you would for a new guitar, and still get a good quality sound (provided you were thorough when checking the instrument before the purchase). If you want to successfully complete guitar tutorials, a good six string is a must!
The First Step: Beginner Lessons
The first step in choosing the right guitar tutorials for you is to have an understanding of your skill level right now. If you have never played, then this part is easy. Search for guitar tutorials that offer beginner level sessions. On the other hand, if you have dabbled in guitar before you may already have a solid understanding of the basics. If so, make sure the guitar tutorials you are considering offer the correct level of instruction so you are actually obtaining new methods and techniques.
If you are completely new to playing and want to find guitar tutorials that offer everything a new player should know, there are a few things you should keep in mind. A good beginner’s program should explain how to change guitar strings and how to hold the guitar and pick correctly. Playing posture should also be covered as well as the anatomy of a guitar and what each part does.
Other Helpful Things to Look For
If you are torn between two guitar tutorials and want to know which is truly better, there are a few other features to look for. First, check for multiple camera angles. These are extremely important to learn finger positions and search for imperfections in your own positions. Next, check for any added music theory thrown into each lesson. It is important to know how to read music as you play; otherwise you are just memorizing the songs.
Guitar tutorials can be a great way to learn guitar at your own pace on your own time. Although they may require an investment up front, you might find you pay less over time than you would for one-on-one lessons with an instructor. In the end, you could save yourself time and money while learning to play the guitar!
